Overview

Simon Morris’ art work has developed from a critical interest in painting practice that stretches from object orientated paintings to site specific wall drawing, installation, and architectural collaborations. Morris has skilfully developed an ongoing investigation into the perception of space, time and action which he explores through the creation of visual systems.

Though Morris’ paintings are abstract, they are in fact directly related to the structures of daily life. His paintings are deeply contemplative, whether exploring the essence of mark-making, changing light or the relationship of forms within architecture. He speaks about colour in reference to sensation and feeling, while his wall drawings are moving meditations; dedicated experiments to record the emergence of an artwork in a site-specific context.

Morris majored in Painting at Ilam School of Fine Arts University of Canterbury, graduating in 1984. He was conferred a MFA from RMIT, Melbourne in 1997. With an established exhibition history, both in New Zealand and internationally, Morris continues to be held in high regard as a conceptual abstract painter and an academic. He is currently Associate Professor at Massey University in Wellington in the Whiti o Rehua School of Art. Morris has made site-based paintings in most of the country’s public galleries. In 2022-23 his exhibition Room of Time at Wellington City Gallery Te Whare Toi continued his ongoing exploration of time-based abstract paintings, which consider the art-making process as much as the finished artwork.
